Every Miss Iowa and Miss Iowa’s Teen contestant begins with a local competition, and this is where the magic starts.

Local competitions are your first step into the Miss America Opportunity. They’re designed to be welcoming, supportive, and a great way to gain experience, whether you’re brand new or ready to take the next step.

Think of local competitions as your entry point into the program.
You’ll compete in a smaller, more personal setting while:
- Building confidence on stage
- Meeting other contestants
- Learning what the experience is all about
Many contestants say their local was where they truly fell in love with the program.
Not at all.
You don’t need pageant experience, coaching, or a perfect resume, just a willingness to try something new and grow.
We’re looking for young women who are:
- Motivated
- Authentic
- Interested in making an impact
Everything else, you’ll learn along the way.
Each local follows the Miss America format, giving you a well-rounded experience, including:
- Private interview
- On-stage conversation
- Talent or HER Story
- Health & fitness
- Evening wear
Don’t worry, local directors guide you through what to expect so you feel prepared and confident.
At each local competition, contestants compete for the opportunity to win titles that advance to the state level.
Most locals will award:
- 1 Miss title
- 1 Teen title
Depending on the number of contestants, some locals may award:
- 2 Miss titles
- 2 Teen titles
This simply means more opportunities to advance, so don’t be afraid to jump in!
